  1. Tap Start accelerometer

    On iPhone, allow motion access when Safari asks.

  2. Tilt the phone

    The marker slides toward the low edge like a ball on a tray. Including gravity reads about 9.8 when the phone is flat.

  3. Shake it

    The peak reading jumps well above 9.8. That is the quickest sign the sensor responds.

  4. Stop or reset

    Stop keeps the last values. Reset clears them and the peak.

If the values change and the peak rises when you shake, the accelerometer works

Auto-rotate, step counting, and shake gestures all depend on this sensor.

If a flat, still phone reads about 9.8 m/s² including gravity, the sensor is scaled correctly

That reading is Earth's gravity. Acceleration without gravity should sit near zero at rest.

If nothing changes, the browser is not getting motion data

Computers and some private browsing modes have no accelerometer access. Open the page on the phone.

  1. Allow motion access

    On iPhone, reload and tap Start to get the prompt again. On Android, check the site's Motion sensors permission, then retest.

  2. Check auto-rotate

    If the screen still rotates when you turn the phone, the sensor works and the browser is the issue. Try Chrome or Safari and retest.

  3. Leave battery saver and restart

    Power saving can pause sensors. Turn it off, restart the phone, and tap Start again.

  4. Run the maker's sensor test

    Samsung's *#0*# menu has a Sensor screen with live accelerometer values. If it fails there too, the phone needs service. Retest here afterwards.

  • The page shows that the browser received acceleration data. It cannot judge calibration, noise, or accuracy.
  • Values arrive through DeviceMotionEvent and may be rounded, throttled, or fused with other sensors depending on the browser.
Does my phone have an accelerometer?

Almost certainly. Every smartphone has one, and if auto-rotate works, it is working. This page shows the numbers behind it.

What does an accelerometer detect?

Movement and gravity along three axes, in metres per second squared. Tilt, shake, and step detection all come from it.

How do I test the accelerometer on Android?

Open this page in Chrome, tap Start, and shake the phone. Samsung phones also have a Sensor test in the *#0*# menu.

What is the difference between an accelerometer and a gyroscope?

The accelerometer senses movement and tilt. The gyroscope senses rotation speed. Try the gyroscope test to compare.

How accurate is a phone accelerometer?

Good enough for games, step counting, and screen rotation, typically within a few percent. A browser cannot measure that accuracy, only the response.
