How to use

Look for recognizable shapes
Burn-in has the shape of static content: a taskbar, a channel logo, a game HUD, or a keyboard. Ignore general panel texture.
Move through 75% gray, white, black, and the colors
Press Space or the arrow keys, or turn on Auto-cycle. Uneven wear can show more strongly on one color than another.
Rest the screen and check again
If you see a shape, use the screen normally or turn it off for an hour, then repeat. Retention fades; burn-in stays.
What the result means
Match what you see to one of these.
If the shape fades after rest, it is image retention
If a faint outline of what was on screen disappears after an hour of varied content or a pixel refresh, the panel is fine. This is common on OLED after long static scenes.
If the shape stays across colors and days, it is burn-in
If the same outline is visible on gray, white, and colors after rest and a pixel refresh, those pixels have worn unevenly. It does not get better, but it can be made less visible.
If the patch is shapeless, it is a uniformity issue
If you see blotches, bands, or tint with no recognizable shape, use the uniformity test instead. That is dirty screen effect or mura, not burn-in.
Troubleshooting
If the test fails, try these in order.
Show varied content or turn the screen off
Play a video or turn the display off for an hour, then look at 50% gray again. Retention fades; burn-in does not.
Run the manufacturer's pixel refresh
OLED TVs and monitors have a pixel refresh or panel care option in the menu. Run it once as documented, then check the gray fields again.
Lower the brightness and hide static elements
Reduce the OLED brightness, hide the taskbar, use dark mode, and turn on the screen saver and pixel shift options. Check again in a week.
Check the warranty
Some makers cover burn-in for a set period. If the shape is clear on the uniformity test as well, contact them before it worsens.
What this test can't tell you
Where a browser check stops.
- A gray field cannot tell temporary retention from permanent burn-in; only time and a pixel refresh can.
