How to use
5 short steps.
Press every key once
Work along each row, then the function keys, arrows, and numpad. Each key stays marked after you release it.
Check both sides of paired keys
Press left and right Shift, Ctrl, Alt, and Win or Cmd separately. The map marks each side on its own.
Turn Num Lock on for the numpad
With Num Lock off the numpad digits report as arrows, Home, and End. Switch it on, then press each digit.
Watch for a key that stays lit
A key that stays in the held colour after you release it is stuck or still sending repeats. Press it again.
Reset before testing another keyboard
Reset clears the map and the count. Plug in the second keyboard and press its keys.
What the result means
Match what you see to one of these.
If a key lights up, it works
If a key turns blue when you press it and stays marked afterwards, the keyboard sent it and the computer received it. The switch, cable, and connection all work for that key.
If a key never lights up, try it in a text field
If one key stays blank after several presses while its neighbours light, type it into a text field. If nothing appears there either, the switch or the keyboard matrix is failing.
If the wrong character appears, check your layout
If Last key shows a different character than the cap, your system language or layout is set differently. The key itself works. Change the layout in your system settings.
If a key stays lit, it is stuck
If a key stays in the held colour after you let go, the switch is not releasing or something is jammed under the cap. Repeated characters in documents point to the same key.
Troubleshooting
If the test fails, try these in order.
Clean under the key
Turn the keyboard over and tap it, then blow out debris under the cap. Press the key again on the map.
Reconnect or change the port
Unplug the keyboard, wait a few seconds, and plug it into a different USB port. On Bluetooth, remove and pair it again, then press the key again.
Check the layout and language
Open your system keyboard settings and confirm the layout matches the keycaps. Press the key again and compare Last key.
Close remapping software
Quit macro tools, key remappers, and game launchers, and disable browser extensions. They can swallow or rename keys. Reload this page and retest.
Try another computer
If the key still stays blank here, test the same keyboard on another computer. If it fails there too, the keyboard has a hardware fault.
What this test can't tell you
Where a browser check stops.
- A key that the system handles before the browser, such as Print Screen, the Windows key, or an Fn shortcut, may not light up here.
- This page cannot measure switch quality, scan rate, debounce, or latency, and the layout may not match a compact, ISO, or laptop keyboard.

Common questions about this test.
How do I test my keyboard?
Press every key on this page and check that each one lights up. Test both Shift, Ctrl, and Alt keys, the arrows, and the numpad with Num Lock on. A key that stays blank after a few presses needs cleaning or repair.
How do I test my laptop keyboard?
The same way. Laptop keyboards report each key like a desktop keyboard. Pick the Compact layout to hide the numpad. Fn combinations and media keys are handled by the laptop, so they appear under Other keys seen or not at all.
How do I test the Fn key or the function keys?
Press F1 to F12 and watch the top row light up. Fn itself does not send a key to the browser. Hold Fn and press a volume or brightness key; if the volume or screen changes, Fn works.
How do I test the Ctrl, Shift, or Alt keys?
Press each one on its own. The map lights the left and right keys separately, so press both sides. Shortcuts such as Ctrl+W or Alt+F4 are handled by the browser or system and cannot be tested here.
Why does a key type the wrong character?
Your system layout does not match the keycaps. The key sends its position correctly, and the system picks the character from the active language. Change the layout in your system settings and press the key again.
