  1. Connect the controller

Plug in a USB cable or pair over Bluetooth, then press any button. The controller appears within a second.

  2. Press every button

Press each face button, bumper, trigger, D-pad direction, stick click, and menu button. Each lights up while held.

  3. Move both sticks

Roll each stick around its full circle and let go. The dot should reach the edge and settle near centre.

  4. Read the numbers

Triggers and sticks show numbers under each control. Watch for values that stick or never reach full travel.

  5. Try the rumble row

Use Weak, Strong, or Both to send a short rumble. The full vibration test adds strength and duration controls.

If a button never lights up

If a button never lights up while the others do, the controller is not sending it. Check the same button in a game before blaming the pad, because a remapping app or a worn switch are the usual causes.

If a stick dot sits off centre at rest

If a stick dot sits away from the centre while you are not touching it, that is drift. Small offsets are normal, so run the stick drift test to measure it against a typical deadzone.

If a trigger stops short of 1.00

If a trigger reads 0.85 at full pull, the controller is reporting a shorter range than it should. Some pads do this by design, so compare with a second controller before deciding it is worn.

If the button names look wrong

If the names do not match the labels on your pad, the browser did not recognise the layout. The numbers are still right, so use the button index to match a game's settings screen.

  1. Press a button after connecting

Browsers hide a controller until you press something on it. Press any button, then look for the connected line at the top of the tester.

  2. Try another cable, port, or pairing

Switch USB ports, use a data cable rather than a charge-only one, or remove and re-pair Bluetooth. Then press a button again.

  3. Close other controller software

Steam, remapping tools, virtual controller drivers, and remote desktop sessions can claim the pad. Quit them and reload this page.

  4. Compare another browser

Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari map some controllers differently. If a button is missing in one, test it in another before assuming a fault.

  5. Retest after a firmware update

Update the controller through Xbox Accessories, the PlayStation firmware updater, or the Switch system menu, then run this test again.

  • The Gamepad API reports normalised values, not raw USB data, so it cannot show polling rate, input latency, or calibration stored in the controller.
  • A button that lights up here works in the browser; a game with its own driver or remapping can still behave differently.
  • Touchpads, gyros, adaptive triggers, and paddles are outside what a browser can read, and rumble is limited to basic dual-rumble.
How do I test my game controller?

Connect it by USB or Bluetooth, open this page, and press any button. Every button, trigger, and stick then shows live on the controller graphic and in the list under it. The page reads input only inside your browser and sends nothing anywhere.

How do I test an Xbox controller?

Plug in an Xbox Series, One, or Elite controller, or pair it over Bluetooth, and press any button. The tester labels the buttons A, B, X, Y, LB, RB, LT, RT, View, and Menu, and shows both sticks and the D-pad.

Can I test a PS5 controller online?

Yes. A DualSense or DualShock 4 works over USB or Bluetooth in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari. Buttons show as Cross, Circle, Square, Triangle, L1, R1, L2, R2, Create, and Options.

Why is my gamepad not detected?

Usually because nothing has been pressed yet. Press a button, then try another cable or port, re-pair Bluetooth, and close Steam or other controller apps. On Linux use USB; on Android and iOS pair over Bluetooth, though some browsers expose fewer buttons.

How can I tell if my controller is bad?

Look for a button that never lights up or a trigger that stops short of full travel. A stick dot that sits off centre while untouched is drift. Run the stick drift test to put a number on it, and the vibration test to check the motors.
