How to use
4 short steps.
Move a finger across the whole box
Cover all 24 cells of the grid. A cell that never shades in while you pass over it is a dead patch on the pad.
Click, right click, and middle click
Tap or press for a click, use two fingers for a right click, and three fingers for a middle click if your system supports it.
Press and drag
Hold down and move. The trail turns thick while you drag.
Scroll and pinch
Scroll with two fingers, then pinch. Pinch arrives as a zoom gesture and lights the last check.
What the result means
Match what you see to one of these.
If every check lights up, the trackpad works
If all seven checks are lit and the grid is full, movement, clicks, drag, scroll, and pinch all reach the browser.
If a cell never shades in, that patch is dead
If one area of the grid stays blank while the rest fills, the pad is not sensing there. Clean it first; if it stays blank, the pad needs repair.
If a gesture never lights, check the system settings
If scroll or pinch stays dark, the gesture is turned off or assigned to something else in your trackpad settings. A missing right click usually means two-finger tap is off.
Troubleshooting
If the test fails, try these in order.
Check the trackpad settings
Windows: Settings, Bluetooth and devices, Touchpad. macOS: System Settings, Trackpad. Turn on tap to click, two-finger scroll, and secondary click, then try the gesture again.
Clean the pad and your fingers
Grease and moisture make a pad miss touches. Wipe it with a dry cloth and fill the grid again.
Disconnect a mouse
Some laptops disable the trackpad when a mouse is connected. Unplug it and move a finger across the box.
Run the built-in diagnostics
On a MacBook hold D at startup for Apple Diagnostics. On a Dell or Lenovo use the vendor diagnostics. Then come back here to confirm movement.
Update the trackpad driver
On Windows update the touchpad driver from Device Manager or the laptop maker. Reload this page and repeat the checks.
What this test can't tell you
Where a browser check stops.
- A browser sees a trackpad as a mouse: it cannot count fingers, read pressure, or detect force click, so gestures the system reserves never show here.
- The grid finds a patch that sends no movement. It cannot measure sensitivity, palm rejection, or physical latency.
