  1. Mark a distance with a ruler

    Put a ruler on the desk and pick a start and end mark. Two to four inches, or five to ten centimeters, works well.

  2. Enter the distance

    Type it in and pick inches or centimeters. Add the DPI from your mouse software if you want to see the difference.

  3. Press and hold in the box, move, release

    Hold the left button inside the box, move the mouse in a straight line from one mark to the other, and let go.

  4. Repeat two or three times

    Small differences come from your hand. Take the middle value. Press Escape at any time to cancel a run.

If the number matches your mouse software, the sensor is set correctly

If the result is within a few percent of the DPI you configured, the sensor reports what the setting promises.

If the number is off by a fixed ratio, scaling is involved

If you see about two thirds or half of the expected value, your system is scaling the cursor. The page corrects for display scaling but not for pointer speed.

If the result changes every run, straighten your movement

If runs differ by more than a few percent, the mouse drifted vertically or stopped short. Move slowly along the ruler edge.

  1. Set pointer speed to the middle and turn off acceleration

    Windows: Settings, Bluetooth and devices, Mouse, set speed to the middle notch and turn off Enhance pointer precision. Then measure again.

  2. Use Chrome or Edge for raw counts

    These browsers can read raw sensor counts, which ignores pointer speed and scaling. The Measurement card says raw counts when that is active.

  3. Allow the cursor lock

    If the browser asks to hide the cursor, allow it so the cursor cannot stop at the screen edge. Press Escape to leave it at any time.

  4. Use a longer distance

    A longer straight run makes ruler error matter less. Measure over four inches or ten centimeters and compare.

  • A browser cannot read the DPI setting in your mouse. This page measures movement per inch, using pointer lock with unadjustedMovement for raw counts where supported.
  • Without raw counts, display scaling, pointer speed, and acceleration change the estimate, so it can differ from the setting in your mouse software.
How can I check my mouse DPI?

Measure it here with a ruler, read it from your mouse software, or look up the model's spec sheet. Software and this page should agree within a few percent when pointer speed is at the default.

Should I use 800 or 1600 DPI?

Either works. What matters is DPI multiplied by your in-game sensitivity. Many players use 800 or 1,600 with a low sensitivity for precise aim. Higher DPI mostly helps on very high resolution screens.

How do I convert 800 DPI to 1600 DPI?

Double the DPI and halve your in-game sensitivity. The cursor and aim then move the same distance for the same hand movement.

Why does the result differ from my mouse software?

Without raw counts the browser sees the cursor after display scaling and pointer speed. Set pointer speed to the middle, turn off acceleration, and measure again, or use Chrome or Edge for raw counts.
